MLIS Student Council (MLISSC)

Student Council serves all MLIS students through our advocacy for an enhanced academic experience, and our programming that promotes social and professional connections.

SOGS represents thousands of graduate students at Western. They operate core services including bus passes and health & dental plans, and advocate for student needs. All current MLIS students, both full-time and part-time, are welcome to join their committees.

Student-Run Media

ELIP is an open access, peer reviewed journal, managed by current MLIS students.

So What? was launched in 2018 by MLIS students and continues to discuss why library and information science matters.

Student Groups Grant

As the MLIS student government receiving funding from SOGS, with a mandate to “enhance the educational experience and quality of life of the MLIS student body”, in part by “acting as a coordinator amongst the MLIS student groups”, this grant provides a means of distributing funds to support the activities of an MLIS Student Group.

 

The grant is structured as follows:
 

  1. There are two (2) grants available each academic semester, up to a maximum of fifty dollars ($50) each (for a total of six possible grants per calendar year).

  2. ​A student group is eligible for this grant once a calendar yearGrant money comes from the Council budget.

  3. Grant applications are brought forward in Council meetings by the Fundraiser and MLIS Student Groups Liaison.

  4. Applications are considered on a first-come, first-served basis.

  5. Members of Council vote whether to approve or reject an application.

  6. Council should endeavour to approve any reasonable application, but may reject an application on any grounds, including if Council deems that the budget is insufficient to cover the requested amount.

  7. If approved, the grant shall be paid out to the requesting MLIS Student Group upon Council receiving a copy of documentation that the event proceeded with funds needed as outlined in the grant application (e.g. a receipt of expenses).

  8. Previous recipients of the grant will be listed on the MLISSC website.


An application for an MLIS Student Group Grant must include the following:
a) Name of the MLIS Student Group.
b) Name(s) of the acting chair(s) of this group.
c) Description of Student Group event for which funding is being sought.
d) How this event enhances the educational experience or quality of life of the MLIS student body.
e) A budget for the planned event, specifying what the grant will be used to pay for.
